The second annual Make-A-Movie Weekend will take place from Friday, July 29 to Sunday, July 31. Team up with your friends and family to make a movie together. Teams from last year will all tell you you’ll be glad you did! Everyone had huge fun.

To check out last year’s films --“Movie Theater Madness,” “Dog Meets Tennis Ball” and “Camp Nature and Nurture” – search for them on You Tube. And start working on your idea.

This year’s teams will meet on Friday evening July 29 6-7 p.m. at the North Wayne Schoolhouse to kick off the event and get the “mystery prop.” Everyone will return Sunday evening July 31 at 6 p.m. to turn in movies, share experiences and enjoy potluck.

On Saturday, Aug. 6, 6-8 p.m., the teams will showcase their movies on the Schoolhouse screen. Prizes will be awarded. Everyone is a winner. Open to the public. Free.

EVENT SCHEDULE

A. ELIGIBILITY: Make-a-Movie Weekend 2010 is open to the general public. The following people are not eligible to enter: organizers of the event and their immediate family members; North Wayne Schoolhouse board members or employees.

B. TO ENTER: To register for the Make-a-Movie Weekend, print and fill out and send in the TERMS AND CONDITIONS FORM (see "E" below). Registration is based on a first-come first-served basis and space is limited to 12 teams of 4 members or fewer. Registration fees are $35 per team, payable to the North Wayne Schoolhouse Project.

C. REGISTRATION PERIOD Registration will begin when announced publicly online and in the Community Advertiser and Messenger. Further announcements with registration opportunities will appear as needed. Registration ends when all spaces are full. If a team must withdraw from the Event for any reason, the team may appoint another team to enter in its place, but no refunds will be given.

D. TEAM COMMITMENT AGREEMENT Entrants will appoint a Team Leader who will sign a Team Commitment Agreement agreeing to the official rules and guidelines. If a team leader is under 21 years of age, that team leader’s parent or legal guardian must sign the Agreement on his/her behalf.

E. TO COMPLETE REGISTRATION Registration is complete when the signed “Team Commitment Agreement” form and the registration fee are delivered to the Committee by email attachment to loonalone@roadrunner.com or by mail or in person to the Make-A-Movie Weekend Committee at 31 Lonefeather Lane, Wayne ME 04284.

F. KICKOFF MEETING Make-a-Movie Weekend will commence at the Kickoff Meeting to be held at the North Wayne Schoolhouse in North Wayne, Maine, on Friday, August 20, 2010 at 6 pm.

G. CLOSING CELEBRATION Each participating group/team must complete its video work in time to deliver it to the Schoolhouse on Sunday August 22 at the “It’s a Wrap” party on Sunday, August 22, 2010 at 6 pm.

H. MAKE A MOVIE FILM FESTIVAL The films will be screened for the public at the Make-a-Movie Film Festival to be held on Saturday August 28 at 6 PM at which time winners in each category and prizes will be announced.

I. MYSTERY PROP At the Kickoff Meeting teams will receive a mystery prop and be given exactly 48 hours to make a video (an "Entry") that is a minimum of 4 minutes and maximum of 6 minutes in length. All movies must contain the mystery prop. All Entries must be created and completed during the 48-hour period designated as the Make-a-Movie Weekend.

J. ATTENDANCE Team members should be present at the Kickoff Meeting, “It’s a Wrap” Party, and Make-a-Movie Film Festival to participate. The team leader must be present.

PREPARING THE ENTRY

A. Most work on the film must be completed during the 48 hours of the Make-A-Movie Weekend. Such work includes, but is not limited to:

Writing any script, if script is used
Rehearsing, if done
Costume/Set work
Shooting
Editing
Sound
Rendering, if done
Outputting to DVD or USB flash drive

B. Work that can be done prior to the official 48-hour time period is:

Organizing Crew
Organizing Cast
Securing Equipment
Scouting/Securing Locations

C. No stock footage or footage shot or created at another time may be used.

D. Animation and special effects are permitted, but must be created during the 48-hour time period.

E. Still photographs are permitted, provided that the team has the rights to them. The photos do not need to be created during the 48-hour time period.

F. All costs associated with the production of the Entry are solely the responsibility of the Entrants.

G. All cast and crew must be volunteers.

H. Any type of video or film recording equipment may be used.

I. Films must be submitted on one of the following media: DVD or USB flash drive.

J. The finished film should have a title card with team name, date, title.

K. We recommend that each team make two copies of the final film, one for submission and one as backup.

L. The film must be viewable on a Mac or PC.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

A. As Team Leader, I certify that I/the team own all rights to the Entry, including, without limitation, the video or digital recording, and the performance contained in each Entry.

B. As Team Leader, I grant/do not grant to the North Wayne Schoolhouse Make-a-Movie committee the rights to use the Entry in the following ways: (please indicate by writing “grant or “do not grant”.)

I _______________the right to screen the Entry at the Make-a-Movie Weekend Screening Event at the North Wayne Schoolhouse;
I _______________the right to screen the Entry at subsequent Make-A-Movie events held at the North Wayne Schoolhouse at dates yet to be determined.
I _______________ a one-time right to post the video on the North Wayne Schoolhouse blog site to promote future Make-a-Movie Weekend events.
I ______________ a one-time right to include the Entry in a DVD of the North Wayne Schoolhouse Make-a-Movie Festival, which will be sold as a fundraising item by the Schoolhouse at the Festival and at other future Schoolhouse events, with all proceeds going to the North Wayne Schoolhouse.

C. I understand that the Make-a-Movie Weekend Committee and the North Wayne Schoolhouse agree to clearly, accurately and consistently give proper credits for each Entry at each screening, online appearance and on the DVD and at any other time the Entry is used, shown or mentioned.

D. As Team Leader, I agree to the terms set forth in “Preparing the Entry.”

E. As Team Leader, I agree to accept personal liability for all claims and damages, expenses, costs and conduct arising out of the participation in this Project, including but not limited to property damage, trademark, copyright, or other intellectual property infringement, right of publicity, right of privacy or defamation.

F. As Team Leader, I agree to release, indemnify and hold harmless Make-a-Movie Weekend Committee members and the North Wayne Schoolhouse from any and all claims.

G. As Team Leader, I agree that the Make-a-Movie Weekend Committee, the North Wayne Schoolhouse and any of their affiliates may not be held liable for any disputes between team collaborators arising out of or related to the Event, nor can they assume any responsibility or liability for technical or communications problems or technical malfunction.

H. As Team Leader, I understand that this is a family event. The Team’s Entry will meet the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) “General Audience” or “G” standard. (A “G-rated” motion picture contains nothing in theme, language, nudity, sex, violence or other matters that, in the view of the MPAA Rating Board, would offend parents whose younger children view the motion picture. Additionally, the film contains no strong language, nudity, sex, or drug usage. Violence is minimal.)

SUMMER 2010 MAKE A MOVIE WEEKEND COMING!

Do you enjoy making movies? Want to learn? The first Make-A-Movie Weekend will take place August 20-22, 2010 at the North Wayne Schoolhouse. Signup starts soon. Watch your Advertiser and Messenger for announcements. Area residents are invited to form teams of 1-4 members each and will have two days to create a six-minute film.

“Families are encouraged to jump in and there will be winners in many categories." says Catherine Fisher, an organizer of the event. “Everybody will have fun."

“People of all ages and backgrounds are trying their hands at capturing and creating visual stories using video,” says Betsy Bowen, also an organizer of the event. "Being able to make a movie will stay with you for a lifetime. You will get better at it every time you try."

The kickoff will be a Friday evening get-together to announce the "mystery prop" to be included in each film.

“The event is a collaborative, low-key opportunity for participants to practice their movie-making skills,” says Chuck Feil, another organizer. Feil, Fisher, Bowen and others will be on call all weekend to help out as needed. The teams will finish their movies on Sunday, and that afternoon there will be a group showing of all the movies.

An accomplished photographer who summers on Lovejoy Pond, Feil leads photographic excursions to unique locations that end with a group event similar to the one planned. "We anticipate people will enjoy working together, exploring and learning to showcase their visual stories."

"The North Wayne Schoolhouse seems like a fitting place to celebrate movie-making," says Bowen. "Once schoolchildren recited memorized speeches in the same auditorium where now we will be watching videos made on a computer."

“We want our community to use and enjoy the schoolhouse,” says Linda McKee, chair of the committee that has been working to preserve it. “This sounds like a fun-filled and educational event that families and others will enjoy.”

North Wayne Schoolhouse Launches Living History Day

May 29, 2009 At 8:30 AM today, for the first time in over forty years, a schoolbus pulled up to the front of the North Wayne Schoolhouse. Mrs. Wallingford (Linda McKee, click on video below) greeted twenty-seven students in the first to fifth grades at the entryway. Then she led them to their old-fashioned wooden desks in the newly renovated classroom.

Each student read aloud the name and description of a real student who had attended the school in the 1930's. The descriptions gave actual historical details about the person they would be recreating in the classroom. As the lessons proceeded, Mrs. Wallingford taught each grade separately one-by-one, the other students working quietly but also noticing what the teacher was teaching their peers.

The lesson drew to an end at 11 AM, time for recess. As it was misty outside and cold, they went to the second floor stage hall to jump rope, play marbles and jacks, and test out the piano. A brown paper bag lunch of a sandwich and apple followed.

After lunch, Bonnie Wilder conducted old-fashioned musical games and the children participated in a spelling bee. The bus waited overtime while half a dozen of them continued to spell words correctly. Wayne Elementary teacher Jennifer Baack reported that one of the returning students said, "I wish we went to that school all year!"

Ben Hur Restoration Wins Matching Funds

The North Wayne Schoolhouse Preservation Project has been awarded a $2,000 matching grant to help restore its historic “Ben Hur” stage curtain on the second floor of the building. The grant was provided by the Maine State Museum with funds from the State of Maine’s New Century Community Program.

The vivid scene of a Roman charioteer and horses was painted in oils on canvas by local artists Lura Wells and Ellsworth Crosby in the early 1900s. It graced the stage for more than half a century, and many former students remember the strong impression the striking curtain made on them.

Joseph R. Phillips, Museum Director, said, “These grants support community efforts to preserve and share the stories of our people, our towns, our families, and how we lived our lives. Without these objects and buildings, important pieces of our Maine Heritage would be lost.”

The restoration of the curtain, which had been stored by the artist’s niece in a local barn after the school closed in 1961, will be completed by professionals with local help from volunteers in May. More than 100 stage curtains have been restored in the state of Vermont through a state grant program, said Steering Committee chair Linda McKee of Wayne.” We’re just beginning to uncover these gorgeous old relics in our own state,” she said. “We hope to share our experience with other communities who may have similar curtains.”

Fall 2008 Reunion - North Wayne Schoolhouse

Yesterday over 30 people gathered together to renew acquaintances and share memories of their schooldays at the North Wayne School. Bob McLaughlin and Mary Farnham keyed off and many others joined in with their stories. Chair Linda McKee looked ahead to next year's program. Recreating the community pleasures of the past is its theme, with a box social, spelling bee and croquet tournament on the roster. Proceeds from such annual events will underwrite the recurring costs of keeping the building functioning. She described plans for area schoolchildren to come to the one-room schoolhouse for day-long immersion experiences in its different style of learning. She reviewed the preservation work done to date, looking ahead to the goals that remain. The restoration of the stage curtain and a new belfry will bring the project of preservation to a close. Fundraising for those will begin soon, mostly by mail.

"Stage Curtains Without Borders" Visits North Wayne Schoolhouse

M. J. Davis of Stage Curtains Without Borders, a Vermont organization that specializes in restoring old stage curtains throughout New England, visited the North Wayne Schoolhouse on Friday, July 25 to inspect the "Ben Hur" curtain recently returned to its original second floor home. Pictured at left, l-r, Eric Morrill, Bob McLaughlin, M.J. Davis, Lois Ault. The Committee learned a great deal about the history and conservation of similar painted stage curtains, of which there are quite a few more than we had thought. In fact, on the same trip, M. J. Davis was visiting both Vienna and Gardiner to advise those towns on their curtains.

In order to determine whether the curtain had been painted in oils or in water-based paint, M. J. Davis applied the "sniff" test.

The result? Oil.

The Committee will be considering the VT organization's conservation proposal soon. If accepted, the conservators would travel to North Wayne bringing their specialized restoration equipment and work for three to four days on location in the schoolhouse while boarding with local residents.

The stage curtain that once hung on the second floor of the schoolhouse came home today, thanks to the generosity of Brenda Joseph at Steep Hill Farm, in whose barn it had been stored for many years. Lura Wells and E. L. Crosby created a lasting heirloom for Wayne when they painted a vibrant scene of a Roman charioteer urging on his four horses on cloth for the children who attended the North Wayne school.

Left, Eric Morrill lifts the curtain wrapped on its wooden spindle (which was mounted into the stage opening and turned to raise and drop the curtain) off the roof of the SUV that brought it from the Steep Hill barn to the schoolhouse.

Here, it's carried into the front door of the schoolhouse, where it was laid on a table on the first floor and given a quick admiring "peek" before being taken up to the second floor. The Schoolhouse Committee will meet with The Maine Historical Society and other experts for advice on its restoration and care.

Out the door again to be taken upstairs while the first floor gets its final touches -- a newly cleaned and oiled wood floor and a great collection of old-fashioned school desks for the recreation of a one-room schoolhouse classroom now underway.

Now it's up the exterior fire stairs to the second floor, where awaits a new life in a revived schoolhouse.

Look At What We've Done!

It's the third year into the project. After a long, cold winter, we've finally been able to resume work on the building. In the upstairs room, the tedious job of repairing the plaster is complete, thanks to Eric Morrill. The room now has a fresh coat of close-to-historically accurate blue

This is the second floor stage now, with the new blue paint showing.

paint mixed to match a chip of the original. The stage is coming along also, and we hope that by the first of July the striking hand-painted curtain painted by local artists E. L. Crosby and Lura Wells can be hung. The second story floor has been cleaned and is ready for a treatment of preservative.

Skip Strong has volunteered to restore the lighting of the room, similar to the lighting in the downstairs classroom. Chase Morrill has also installed the long handicap-access ramp that leads to the back door.

And, at last, a sign for the historic project will go up very soon!

Currently, the downstairs right entry is being renovated to match its original floor plan. The wall that had been removed for the oil furnace that heated the building when the Grange occupied it is being rebuilt. The restoration of the coat closet off the left entry and the hallway will remain unfinished until later in the year.

One of our most successful recent efforts has been the Adopt-A-Desk project. When the school closed in 1962, the school desks were sold. We are now trying to furnish the room with similar antique desks in anticipation of providing an historic classroom for school groups wishing to experience how earlier Wayne students learned. For $50 per desk, participants underwrote the expected costs of the 25 desks plus a teacher's desk. Now the challenge is to locate desks of varying sizes to accommodate a room of mixed ages from kindergarten to eighth grade. If you know of any available desks, contact us. Here are examples of two types of desk that we have found.

We have recently acquired two U. S. flags with 48 stars, and are seeking a 1930's globe, framed George Washington and Abraham Lincoln prints, and of course VOLUNTEERS! This summer, volunteers will complete interior painting of the upstairs windows, help with spreading gravel in the cellar, install a swing set donated by the Crosby family, landscape the front yard for playground space, and do other smaller but important tasks. The Committee remembers with great appreciation the enthusiastic contributions of Audrey Goucher to the Schoolhouse Project and extends its deepest sympathy to her family. Bob Stephenson, a former CPA, will take over her responsibilities as Treasurer. She is missed.

Our thanks also go to Cathy Cook, who this past year produced an amazing video documentary of interviews with former students at the school (available at the library), to Betsy Bowen for her collection of historical photographs and documents, and especially to the so very many men and women who over the past year have said, "Sure, I can help!"
