Fall 2008 Reunion - North Wayne Schoolhouse

Yesterday over 30 people gathered together to renew acquaintances and share memories of their schooldays at the North Wayne School. Bob McLaughlin and Mary Farnham keyed off and many others joined in with their stories. Chair Linda McKee looked ahead to next year's program. Recreating the community pleasures of the past is its theme, with a box social, spelling bee and croquet tournament on the roster. Proceeds from such annual events will underwrite the recurring costs of keeping the building functioning. She described plans for area schoolchildren to come to the one-room schoolhouse for day-long immersion experiences in its different style of learning. She reviewed the preservation work done to date, looking ahead to the goals that remain. The restoration of the stage curtain and a new belfry will bring the project of preservation to a close. Fundraising for those will begin soon, mostly by mail.

Check out some of the video clips from the reunion!

This video is great and for a brief moment, I thought Bob and Mary was going to do a little 'clogging' for us!!! Betsy, hats off to you and the others who have devoted so much time into bringing the North Wayne Schoolhouse back to life. I attended school there through the
4th grade before moving to the Farmington area. I have such 'vivid' memories of that stage curtain, thinking it was so beautiful. Also, of Bob Mc and my brother Lawrence picking on my brother Francis, but all is now forgiven, Bob! I can only wish that my children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren could know the lifelong values of growing up in such a small, close-knit community as was North Wayne, way back then. Sorry I missed the open house last Sunday and will look forward to attending the next planned one. Again, a super job to all involved and thanks for sharing your accomplishments on this project.

This is an awesome thing. I kept reading about it in the newsletter but couldn't figure out which building it was. I thought this building was an old Grange Hall! Yep, we're from 'away' (Michigan).
Nicely done.
